You attend a "non-charismatic" church?

Charismatic as defined by the dictionary.

"Of, relating to, or characterized by charisma
Of, relating to, or being a type of Christianity that emphasizes personal religious experience and divinely inspired powers."

I don't think I've ever heard anybody describe their church as non-charismatic before. Must be a great church.

Yes, it is a great church! :-)

It's not charasmatic in that it's not a "hanging from the chandeliers," speaking in tongues, etc. church. Many times non-denominational churches can be quite "wild," but our church is not that. It's exciting, of course :-), but it's not charasmatic in the sense of what is typically meant by charasmatic in the church realm.

Dictionary-definition-wise, it's quite charasmatic since it does have quite a bit of charisma. :-)

It's hard to tell if you posted this intending to be kind, so I'm going to assume the best....

I can’t help but agree with the earlier poster’s thoughts on your profile decree.

While I would not consider myself to be of the charismatic (or "charasmatic" as you insist on spelling it) persuasion of doctrine, I do think it’s sad that we in the church are so afraid of other denominations that we will label ourselves as being “non” or closed to the thoughts of other believers. I find that churches, and even individual Christians, who label themselves as “non” usually tend to develop theological systems that avoid many of the Bible’s teachings and reinterpret those they can’t avoid. You can almost bet on the fact that the gifts of the Holy Spirit are described in a “non” church as gifts that became obsolete once the New Testament was written and collected.

I wouldn’t describe myself as a charismatic, but c’mon…a non-charismatic? We need to get over our fears of other denominations! It’s gotten old!

Thanks for correcting my spelling. :-)

And trust me, I am NOT "afraid" of denominations. I just don't want to give people the wrong impression about the type of church I attend, since it is nondenominational. Most people think that nondenominational = charismatic, and since that isn't us, I didn't want people to assume wrongly.

But I guess in my attempt to do so, people have still assumed wrongly about me...... :-(

Hi, my name is Tim. I grew up in a Baptist church, an Assembly of God school, and currently serve as a minister in The Salvation Army. I too would not describe myself as being from the "charismatic persuasion". But I have to wonder, why would anybody be concerned that somebody else might think they were? After all, in the end, doctrine is just a matter of opinion. We all have our theories, but none of us know for sure and the likelihood that any of us have it completely right has to be a million to one…at least!

I too am saddened by the fear and disdain that so many denominations seem to have for one another. All this divisiveness couldn’t have been God’s plan for the church. It makes me admire the early church more and more when I think about some of the issues they worked through without splitting up (circumcision comes to mind). The devil must be awfully proud of himself for what he’s accomplished in the church.

And, for the record, I wouldn’t consider a non-denominational church to be charismatic…nor would I care if they were. Sorry to see you beaten up over this. I have love, even for my “non” brothers and sisters! : )

Good grief people! Get over it already. I see nothing wrong with saying you are from a non-charismatic church or what have you. Yes, I'm in a foul mood today. Our air conditioner has broken for the 2nd time in less than a month!

What I'd like to know is...what does it MATTER if I go to a non-charismatic, nondenominational church???? What is the big stink if I say so? I'm not big on denominations (God is more concerned about our unity and our following His Word rather than what denomination we are), which is one reason why I go to a nondenominational church. MOST of the time, people think of charismatic churches when they think of a nondenominational church. Since my husband and I disagree with some of the things that make charismatic churches "charismtic," I want to make sure that I'm not assumed to believe in those things. Not because I'm afraid of denominations or some such nonsense, but because those are things that I don't believe. Just like I wouldn't want to mislead someone into thinking I believe in Reformed theology, I don't want them to think I attend a charismatic church.

Not sure why it has apparently offended some that I had (and will have in a few minutes because I'm changing it back) in my profile that I attend a non-charismatic church. I'd think that they'd be more offended by other blogs out there that promote immoral behavior or religions that are steeped in lies....

I think you’d better include “non-reformed theologist” in your profile. Just in case! Wouldn’t want anybody to assume that you are one. Lord knows WHAT might happen!
